Why Your Baby Might Not Smash the Cake—and That’s Okay!

You've picked the perfect theme.
You've ordered the cake.
You've planned the outfit.
You've imagined your baby sitting in front of the cake, grabbing a giant handful of frosting and absolutely destroying it.
And then the big moment arrives…
Your baby looks at the cake.
Touches it.
Maybe pokes it once.
And then looks at you like:
“What exactly am I supposed to do with this?” 😂
If that happens, don't panic!
Your baby does not have to smash the cake for your cake smash session to be a success.
Some Babies Just Don't Like Cake
We all have our preferences.
Some babies love cake immediately.
Others aren't quite sure about the texture, smell, or taste.
And some babies simply don't understand why everyone is suddenly so excited about a giant blob sitting in front of them.
That's completely normal.
Your baby's reaction is part of their personality—and that's exactly what we're there to photograph.
New Foods Can Be Weird
Think about how many new things your baby has experienced during their first year.
New foods.
New textures.
New tastes.
New smells.
A cake covered in frosting can be a pretty strange experience for a little person who has never seen anything like it before.
Don't be surprised if your baby approaches the cake cautiously.
They may start with one finger.
Then another.
Maybe they'll lick the frosting.
Maybe they'll take a tiny bite.
That counts!
There is no cake-smashing rulebook.
Some Babies Are More Cautious
Some babies are naturally adventurous.
Others like to take their time.
If your baby wants to inspect the cake before touching it, that's okay.
They may stare at it.
Circle around it.
Touch the frosting.
Look at Mom.
Look at the cake again.
We're not in a hurry.
Sometimes giving them time to get comfortable is all they need.
Your Baby Might Be Having an Off Day
Here's something parents sometimes forget:
Babies are babies.
They don't always wake up in the mood for a photoshoot.
Maybe they didn't sleep well.
Maybe they're teething.
Maybe they're hungry.
Maybe they're tired.
Maybe they woke up that morning and decided today was the day they were going to test your patience. 😂
It happens.
That's why I keep cake smash sessions relaxed and baby-led.
We'll take breaks when needed and give your little one time to warm up.
You Don't Need to Force It
Please don't feel like you have to convince your baby to smash the cake.
We don't need to put their hands into the frosting or encourage them to do something they're clearly not interested in doing.
We're here to capture your baby—not force a Pinterest moment.
If they love the cake, we'll photograph the chaos.
If they gently explore it, we'll photograph that.
If they want nothing to do with it, we'll photograph that too.
Those reactions are all part of who your baby is right now.
Sometimes the Best Pictures Happen Without the Smash
Here's the secret:
The cake isn't actually the star of the session.
Your baby is.
Some of my favorite images can happen when a baby isn't smashing anything at all.
The curious little look.
The tiny finger touching the frosting.
The confused expression.
The laugh when Mom makes a silly face.
The moment they finally decide to take a bite.
Those are the memories you'll want to keep.
And We Still Have the Bathtub!
Even if your baby isn't interested in destroying the cake, we still have one more fun part of the session.
The bathtub splash! 🛁
After the cake portion, your little one gets to splash, play, and get cleaned up.
Sometimes a baby who wasn't interested in the cake suddenly becomes VERY interested in the bathtub.
And those little splashes, smiles, wet toes, and giggles can make some of the cutest photographs of the entire session.
Parents, You Don't Have to Stress
I know how much thought goes into your baby's first birthday.
You want everything to be special.
You want the pictures to be perfect.
But please don't put that pressure on yourself—or your baby.
The best photographs aren't always the ones you planned.
Sometimes they're the completely unexpected moments.
The little face you weren't expecting.
The tiny reaction that makes everyone laugh.
The moment your baby reaches for you instead of the cake.
Those are the moments that tell your story.
Your Baby Only Turns ONE Once
Your baby doesn't have to smash a cake to celebrate turning one.
They just have to show up and be themselves.
We'll capture the sweet portraits, the personality, the cake exploration, the mess—or lack of mess—and finish with a fun bathtub splash.
Whether your baby demolishes the cake in 30 seconds or spends the entire time giving it the side-eye…
we're going to make memories worth keeping. 🤍
And honestly?
Years from now, you may look at that photograph of your baby refusing to touch the cake and laugh.
Because that's them.
And that's exactly what makes it perfect.
