Why You Should Take Family Photos Every Year

You know how people always say:
“They grow up so fast.”
I know. I know.
It's one of those things you hear constantly as a parent.
Until you look at a photograph from a year ago and suddenly realize:
Oh. They REALLY did.
That baby isn't a baby anymore.
Your toddler's face has changed.
Those little baby teeth are gone.
Your daughter is suddenly taller.
Your son doesn't fit in your arms the same way.
And you can't quite remember when it happened.
That's exactly why I believe family photos are worth taking every year.
Because One Year Changes Everything
When you're living it, a year doesn't always feel like a huge amount of time.
You're busy.
School.
Sports.
Birthday parties.
Work.
Appointments.
Laundry.
Homework.
Dinner.
Bedtime.
Repeat.
Then you look at a photograph from last year.
And suddenly you notice everything.
Your child's face is different.
Their personality has changed.
Their hair is longer.
They're missing a tooth.
They're standing taller.
They're not a baby anymore.
And you realize:
I don't want to forget this version of them.
Your Children Won't Always Look Like This
This is the part I really want parents to think about.
Your children aren't going to stay little.
That toddler who insists on being carried everywhere won't always want to be carried.
That little hand that automatically reaches for yours won't always reach for it.
The child who crawls into your lap every night will eventually decide they're too cool for that.
And that little voice?
It will change.
Their expressions will change.
Their interests will change.
Their entire personality will continue developing.
Every year gives you a different version of your child.
And every version deserves to be remembered.
You Don't Need a Big Milestone
A lot of families think they need a reason to schedule family pictures.
A new baby.
A birthday.
A graduation.
A holiday.
A pregnancy.
Those are all wonderful reasons.
But you don't actually need one.
You being a family is enough.
You don't need to wait until something changes.
Because the truth is:
Something is always changing.
Your kids are growing.
Your family is evolving.
And this exact combination of people, personalities, ages, and relationships exists only right now.
Imagine Looking at Your Photos Ten Years From Now
This is one of my favorite things about photographing families.
Imagine you have photographs from:
2026
Then:
2027
Then:
2028
Then:
2029
You can see your children growing right in front of you.
Maybe your toddler becomes a little kid.
The little kid becomes a preteen.
The preteen suddenly becomes a teenager.
And somewhere along the way, you realize you've created an entire visual history of your family.
That's pretty incredible.
Your Family Doesn't Have to Look the Same Every Year
And please don't feel like you need to recreate the same session every year.
One year we might photograph your family in the Arizona desert.
Another year we might find a beautiful location in Verrado.
Maybe next year you want something more playful.
Maybe you want to include your family dog.
Maybe Grandma and Grandpa join you.
Maybe you have another baby.
Maybe your kids are old enough to explore and run around the entire session.
That's the fun part.
Your photographs can grow with your family.
Your Kids Will Notice You Were There Too
Here's another reason I want you to take family photos every year:
Get in the picture.
I know.
You probably have approximately 47,000 photographs of your kids on your phone.
But how many are you actually in?
And how many include the whole family?
Your children deserve photographs of themselves with you.
Not just pictures you took of them.
Pictures of the two of you together.
Pictures of Mom and Dad.
Pictures of siblings.
Pictures of the whole family.
Because someday, those photographs become part of their history too.
Don't Wait Until Everyone Is "Perfect"
Don't wait until your kids are older.
Don't wait until you lose weight.
Don't wait until your toddler becomes easier.
Don't wait until the baby sleeps through the night.
Don't wait until you have more money.
Don't wait until everyone has perfect hair.
Life is not going to suddenly become perfectly convenient.
And your children aren't going to stop growing while you wait for it.
Take the pictures now.
And No, Your Kids Don't Have to Behave
If your first thought is:
“But my kids are CRAZY.”
Good.
Mine isn't a photography studio where everyone has to sit perfectly still and smile on command. 😂
I want the real stuff.
The laughter.
The running.
The cuddles.
The sibling chaos.
The goofy faces.
The serious faces.
The little personalities.
And yes, occasionally the meltdown.
Because those things are part of your family.
And I want your photographs to actually feel like your family.
The Magic Happens When You Compare Them
One family photograph is beautiful.
But five years of family photographs?
That's a story.
You start seeing things you didn't notice at the time.
The way your kids used to hold hands.
How tiny they were next to you.
How much they've grown.
How their personalities changed.
How their relationship with their siblings evolved.
How your family changed.
And you'll probably look at some of them and think:
“I can't believe they were ever that little.”
That's the magic of photographing your family year after year.
You Don't Need to Make It Complicated
You don't need a giant production every year.
You don't need a new outfit for everyone.
You don't need a fancy location.
You don't need perfectly behaved kids.
You just need to make the decision:
We're going to document this year.
And I'll take care of the rest.
I'll help you choose the location.
I'll help you figure out what to wear.
I'll guide you through the session.
I'll keep the kids moving.
I'll look for the little moments.
And I'll make sure Mom gets in the pictures too.
One Day, You'll Be Glad You Did
Your kids are only this age once.
This exact version of your family exists for such a short amount of time.
So take the picture.
Even if you're tired.
Even if your toddler is wild.
Even if your hair isn't cooperating.
Even if you don't feel like you're "ready."
Because someday, you're going to look at that photograph and realize:
That was us.
That was our little family.
That was the season when they were this tiny.
That was the way they laughed.
That was the way they held my hand.
That was home.
And you'll be so glad you took the picture.
