Why Stop at ONE? How a 2-Year Cake Smash Is Different

Your baby turned ONE.

You celebrated with the cake, the frosting-covered cheeks, the adorable portraits, and maybe even a bathtub splash.

And now somehow…

They're TWO.

Wait. How did that happen?!

If you loved your baby's first cake smash, you may be wondering:

“Can we do another one for their second birthday?”

Absolutely!

But here's the fun part:

A 2-year cake smash isn't just a repeat of the first birthday session.

Your little one has changed so much in just one year, and their second birthday session should show off the TWO-year-old they've become.

At ONE, We're Meeting Your Baby

At a first birthday cake smash, your little one is still very much a baby.

They're discovering the cake.

They're learning how to interact with the camera.

They're figuring out what they're allowed to touch.

They may sit quietly, cautiously explore the frosting, or completely destroy the cake in thirty seconds.

And we love all of it!

The focus is on capturing those sweet baby expressions and the excitement of reaching that huge first milestone.

But by TWO?

Oh, you've got a whole different kid. 😂

At TWO, Their Personality Is BIG

Your two-year-old has opinions.

Lots of them.

They know what they like.

They know what they don't like.

They have favorite toys, favorite foods, favorite people, favorite words, and very strong feelings about what they will and will not be doing today.

And honestly?

That's what makes a 2-year session so much fun.

Instead of simply watching your baby discover the cake, we're capturing their personality as a little person.

The silly faces.

The giggles.

The attitude.

The curiosity.

The excitement.

The “NO!”

The “I do it!”

All those little things that make your two-year-old uniquely them.

They're Not Just Sitting There Anymore!

At ONE, your baby may still be sitting in one spot for much of their session.

At TWO?

Good luck. 😂

Your little one is likely running, jumping, dancing, exploring, and wanting to investigate everything around them.

That's why a 2-year cake smash can be more interactive.

Instead of expecting your child to simply sit and smash a cake, we can incorporate movement and play into the session.

And if they decide to run off?

Well…

That's probably the most two-year-old thing they could do.

The Cake Smash Becomes More Interactive

At ONE, your baby may cautiously poke the cake.

At TWO, they may know exactly what they're supposed to do.

Or they may decide to eat the frosting with their fingers.

Or use a spoon.

Or pick up the cake.

Or announce that they don't want cake at all.

Again…

Two-year-olds have opinions. 😂

The fun is watching them interact with the cake in a way that reflects their personality.

Choose a Theme That Feels Like THEM

This is where you can really have fun.

Your two-year-old probably has favorite things now.

Maybe they're obsessed with dinosaurs.

Animals.

Trucks.

Princesses.

Construction equipment.

Unicorns.

Superheroes.

Sports.

A favorite cartoon.

Or maybe they're currently fascinated by something incredibly random that you never expected.

That's your theme!

And remember, the themes you see on my website are simply inspiration.

You're never limited to a specific list.

We can use an idea you've seen, change it, combine ideas, or create something completely different.

Your child's interests at TWO may be completely different from what they loved at ONE.

You Can Still Include the Cake…

Of course!

It's still a birthday celebration.

But the cake doesn't have to be the entire focus.

We can incorporate more interaction, movement, personality, and play around the cake.

Because at TWO, your child is giving us so much more to photograph.

And Yes, We Can Still Get Messy

If you loved those frosting-covered cheeks from the first birthday, you don't have to give them up just because your baby is now a toddler.

Cake is still allowed.

Mess is still encouraged.

And if your two-year-old goes all in?

Even better!

The difference is that now your little one has a whole lot more personality to bring to the mess.

The Bathtub Splash Can Change, Too

At ONE, the bathtub splash may be all about those adorable baby toes and little splashes.

At TWO?

Your toddler may have discovered the joy of making the BIGGEST SPLASH POSSIBLE.

Which, honestly, can make for some pretty hilarious photographs.

The bathtub portion can become more playful and interactive, giving your two-year-old another opportunity to show off their personality.

What About Parent Photos?

Just like with the first birthday, you can choose to add parent photos to your session.

And once again…

Please get in the picture.

Your child is changing so quickly.

They may be bigger than they were at ONE, but they are still little.

These photographs capture you together during a very specific chapter of your family's life.

One day, you'll look back and realize how much changed between ONE and TWO.

Why Do a 2-Year Cake Smash?

Because your child is completely different now.

At ONE, you captured the baby.

At TWO, you're capturing the toddler.

And that difference is incredible.

Their face has changed.

Their personality has exploded.

Their interests have developed.

Their vocabulary has grown.

Their expressions are bigger.

Their movements are bigger.

Their opinions are definitely bigger. 😂

A second birthday session gives you the opportunity to document that transformation.

ONE and TWO Tell Two Completely Different Stories

That's really the beauty of doing both.

Your first birthday photographs show your baby discovering their world.

Your second birthday photographs show your little person interacting with it.

At ONE:

“What's this?”

At TWO:

“I know exactly what this is, and I'm going to do it MY way.”

And honestly?

I wouldn't want it any other way.

Don't Wait Until They're Three!

Okay, maybe I'm being dramatic.

But toddlers change so quickly that a year can make a huge difference.

If you loved documenting ONE, consider making the second birthday a tradition.

Not because the photographs need to look the same.

But because they shouldn't.

The whole point is to see how much your child has changed.

ONE gives you one version of your little one.

TWO gives you another.

And someday, you'll be so glad you captured both.
