When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

Ohhhh my goodness someone's having a be be!

You're expecting a baby. ❤️

Congratulations!

Now comes the giant list of things you're supposed to remember before that tiny human arrives.

Doctor's appointments.Nursery.Car seat.Hospital bag.Baby names.And somewhere in there...

“Oh! We should probably book newborn pictures!” 😂

So when exactly should you book your newborn photography session?

My recommendation: Don't wait until your baby arrives.

The best time to book your newborn photography session is during pregnancy, ideally around your second or early third trimester.

You don't have to know your baby's exact arrival date. We can plan around your estimated due date and adjust once your little one makes their grand entrance.

Why Book Your Newborn Session Before Baby Arrives?

Because once your baby is here, life gets a little...busy.

You're recovering.

You're feeding around the clock.

You're learning your baby's schedule—or realizing your baby has decided schedules are for other people. 😂

And suddenly that newborn photography session you meant to schedule becomes one more thing on your very long list.

Booking ahead means your session is already on the calendar but still adjustable.

You can focus on your baby while I handle the photography planning.

What If My Baby Comes Early?

This is one of the reasons I don't schedule newborn sessions based on a strict “baby must be exactly X days old” rule.

Babies don't read calendars.

If your little one arrives early, we simply communicate and adjust your session date accordingly.

Your estimated due date gives us a starting point—not a deadline.

What If My Baby Comes Late?

Same thing!

If your baby decides they aren't quite ready to make their appearance, we adjust.

Your due date isn't a reservation for the baby's arrival. It's simply our best guess. 😂

Once your baby arrives, we'll choose the session date that works best based on your baby's age, your recovery, and my availability.

When Should the Actual Newborn Session Take Place?

Many newborn photographers prefer photographing babies within the first couple of weeks after birth because babies are often sleepier and naturally curlier during this stage. I find the 7-10 day range is that sweeter but not always sweet spot.

But here's something I want expecting parents to know:

There isn't one magical day when your newborn becomes “too old” for newborn photography.

Every baby is different.

Some babies are sleepy.

Some are wide awake.

Some love being curled up.

Some want to stretch their legs and look around at everything.

And that's okay.

I work with your baby rather than expecting your baby to fit into a rigid schedule.

What If My Baby Is Already Here?

Don't panic!

If you've already had your baby and haven't booked your session yet, reach out anyway.

I may still have availability, and there are beautiful photographs we can create at different stages of those first weeks.

The worst thing that can happen is that you ask.

And I would much rather you reach out than decide you've “missed your chance” without asking.

What Happens After You Book?

This is where I try to make your life easier.

Once your newborn session is booked, we'll start planning.

We'll talk about the overall style you're looking for and begin working on wardrobe coordination.

And you don't have to figure out everyone's outfits alone.

I don't provide clothing for Mom, Dad, or older siblings, but I do help you coordinate what everyone wears.

Send me screenshots.

Send me links.

Send me pictures of outfits you've already found.

We'll look at colors, textures, patterns, and styles together so everyone coordinates beautifully.

And for your newborn?

I've got you covered.

I have newborn clothing, wraps, bonnets, accessories, and props available for your session.

So you don't have to spend hours trying to find the perfect tiny outfit that your baby may wear for approximately 14 minutes. 😂

What If I Don't Know What I Want Yet?

That's completely fine.

You don't have to arrive with a Pinterest board and a ten-page vision document.

We'll figure it out together.

You can show me photographs you love, tell me colors you're drawn to, or simply tell me:

“Anne, I have no idea. Help.”

I can work with that. 😂

Don't Forget About Mom and Dad

Newborn photographs aren't just about the baby.

They're about your family becoming a family of three, four, five, or however many people are joining the adventure.

Mom holding her baby.

Dad looking down at those tiny fingers.

Siblings meeting their new brother or sister.

The way your entire family fits together when everything is brand new.

These photographs are going to mean something different as the years go by.

That's why I encourage parents not to skip the family photographs.

Your baby deserves pictures of themselves.

But someday, they're also going to want pictures of you with them.

So, When Should You Book?

If you're expecting and you're thinking:

“Should we go ahead and book our newborn photographer?”

My answer is:

Yes.

Reach out during pregnancy so we have plenty of time to plan your session, coordinate your family's outfits, choose your newborn's wardrobe and styling, and get everything ready.

Then when your baby arrives, you can focus on the important stuff.

Like staring at their tiny face for approximately 97% of your day. ❤️

And when your little one makes their debut, just let me know.

We'll take it from there.

Your Baby Is Only This Tiny Once

Those first days are exhausting.

Beautiful.

Messy.

Emotional.

Sleep-deprived.

Wonderful.

And incredibly short.

You won't be able to stop time.

But you can preserve some of it.

The tiny fingers.

The little toes.

The sleepy stretches.

The way your baby fits perfectly against your chest.

The first time your older child holds their new sibling.

The look on Mom and Dad's faces when they realize:

“This is our baby.”

That's what we're really planning when we book a newborn photography session.

Not just pictures.

Memories of a season you'll never get back.
