What to Wear to Your Newborn Photography Session

So you've booked your newborn session. Your baby is covered because I've got newborn outfits, wraps, bonnets, accessories, and props ready to go.

But then comes the question I hear all the time:

“Okay...but what are WE supposed to wear?” 😂

Don't panic.

You don't have to figure it out alone.

One of the things I love helping my TAQ families with is coordinating everyone's outfits before your newborn session. You can send me screenshots, pictures, links, or even a photo of something you already own, and we'll work together to create a look that photographs beautifully.

And no—you absolutely do NOT have to match everyone perfectly.

Think Coordinated, Not Matching

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans.

Unless that's your thing. Then you do you. 😂

Instead, I love helping families choose colors and textures that complement each other without looking overly matched.

Think:

• Creams and soft neutrals

• Warm beige and tan

• Soft browns

• Muted blues

• Dusty greens

• Soft blush

• Warm earth tones

• Simple, timeless patterns

The goal is for your family to look connected without looking like you all bought the same outfit in different sizes.

Mom: Choose Something You Feel Beautiful In

Mom, this one is important.

You just had a baby—or you're about to.

You don't need to squeeze yourself into something uncomfortable just because you saw it on Pinterest.

Choose something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and like yourself.

Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, long skirts, simple dresses, and flattering silhouettes photograph beautifully during newborn sessions.

And if you're nursing, think about accessibility, too. You want something that makes it easy to feed your baby when they need you.

Because there will probably be a feeding break.

There may be several. 😂

And that's completely normal.

Dad: Keep It Simple

Dad doesn't need anything complicated.

A simple button-down, sweater, henley, or well-fitted shirt with coordinating pants can look fantastic.

Neutral colors are always a safe choice.

And if Dad is already giving you the:

“Do I REALLY have to wear this?”

look...

Yes, Dad.

You do. 😂

But I promise I won't make you pose for three hours.

What Should Siblings Wear?

This is where things can get fun.

Older siblings don't need to match the newborn exactly. Instead, we'll coordinate their outfit with the colors and style we're using for the baby.

Simple dresses, rompers, sweaters, neutral tops, and classic pieces photograph beautifully.

Avoid anything that completely overwhelms your child's face or personality.

And if your little one has a favorite outfit they absolutely LOVE, send me a picture.

We can work with it!

Don't Forget About Your Newborn

This is the easy part.

I've got your baby covered.

That means you don't have to spend hours searching for tiny newborn outfits that they'll probably only wear once.

What About Patterns?

Patterns aren't automatically bad.

But when you have several family members wearing different patterns, things can get visually busy very quickly.

If one person has a noticeable pattern, consider keeping everyone else's clothing more simple.

A good rule is:

One statement piece + simple coordinating pieces = beautiful gallery.

Texture Is Your Friend

One of my favorite ways to make family photographs visually interesting is through texture.

Think:

• Knits

• Linen

• Soft cotton

• Lace

• Gauze

• Ribbed fabrics

• Chunky sweaters

• Subtle embroidery

Textures add dimension to photographs without making the outfits feel too busy.

And newborn photography is perfect for soft, cozy textures.

What I Would Avoid

There are a few things I generally recommend staying away from:

Large logos

They can become distracting and date your photographs.

Neon colors

They can reflect color onto skin and become the first thing you notice in an image.

Extremely bold patterns

They can compete with your baby's tiny details.

Everyone wearing exactly the same thing

Unless you genuinely love that look, coordinating usually creates a more natural result.

Anything you don't feel comfortable wearing

This might be the most important one.

If you're uncomfortable, it's going to show.

Wear something that makes you feel like you.

Your Clothes Don't Have to Be Perfect

Please don't stress yourself out trying to create a Pinterest-perfect wardrobe.

Your family doesn't have to look like they stepped out of a magazine.

You just need to look like your family on one of the most important days of your lives.
