What to Wear for Family Photos: A Stress-Free Guide for Arizona Families

You booked your family photos. Now comes the question every parent asks: “What are we going to wear?” 😂

Don’t worry—you don’t need everyone dressed like they walked out of the same catalog, and your kids definitely don’t need to wear something they hate just because it looks cute in a picture.

At TAQ Photography, I want your family photos to look like your family—comfortable, connected, and actually having fun.

Here are a few simple tips to help you choose outfits without losing your mind in the process.

Start With One Outfit You Love

Instead of trying to coordinate everyone at once, start with one outfit you absolutely love.

Maybe it's Mom's dress, Dad's shirt, or even your little one's adorable outfit.

Then build everyone else's clothing around it.

You don't need matching outfits. You need coordinating outfits.

Think colors that work together rather than everyone wearing the exact same shade.

Choose Colors That Work Together

For Arizona family photos, I love earthy, warm, and soft colors.

Think:

• Cream and ivory

• Beige and tan

• Soft browns

• Rust and terracotta

• Sage and muted greens

• Dusty blue

• Soft blush

• Denim

• Warm neutrals

You can absolutely add color! Just try to avoid having every family member wear a completely different bright color.

A good rule is to choose 2–4 main colors and mix them throughout everyone's outfits.

Don't Be Afraid of Texture

Texture can make photographs look so much more interesting.

Think:

Linen + denim + knit + lace + corduroy + soft cotton + suede

A textured sweater, flowy dress, denim jacket, or little cardigan can add dimension without making your outfits feel overly complicated.

And honestly? Texture photographs beautifully.

Mix Patterns Carefully

Patterns aren't forbidden!

You just don't want everyone wearing a different pattern at the same time.

If one person is wearing a floral dress, for example, the rest of the family can pull colors from that dress and wear simpler pieces.

Small, subtle patterns tend to photograph better than extremely bold or distracting prints.

Comfort Matters—Especially With Kids

This one is HUGE.

If your toddler absolutely hates wearing that adorable button-up shirt, we're probably going to know about it approximately 14 seconds into your session. 😂

Choose clothing that allows your kids to move, play, run, snuggle, and be themselves.

Your family session isn't a formal school picture.

We're going to move around.

We're going to play.

We're going to cuddle.

We're going to capture the moments in between the poses.

So make sure everyone can actually move comfortably in what they're wearing.

Avoid Big Logos and Characters

Unless there's a really good reason for it, I recommend avoiding large logos, words, and character graphics.

They can pull attention away from the people in the photograph.

The goal is for someone looking at your images to see your family first, not the giant logo on someone's shirt.

Consider Your Location

Your outfits should make sense for where we're taking your photos.

If we're outdoors in the Arizona desert, warm neutrals, earthy colors, denim, and natural textures can look beautiful against the landscape.

If we're photographing your family somewhere more colorful or urban, we can approach your wardrobe differently.

Your location and outfits should work together instead of competing with one another.

What About Shoes?

Please don't forget the shoes!

Shoes are part of the outfit and will show up in more photos than you might expect.

You don't necessarily need fancy shoes. Clean, simple shoes that coordinate with the rest of the outfit are usually perfect.

And if your kids want to run around barefoot for a few pictures?

I'm not mad about it.

Some of my favorite family photographs happen when everyone stops worrying about being perfectly dressed and just enjoys the moment.

What I Don't Want You to Do

Please don't spend three weeks stressing over whether your family is dressed "correctly."

There is no magical outfit formula that makes a family photograph beautiful.

Connection does that.

Your child laughing at Dad.

Mom pulling everyone in for a hug.

Siblings being ridiculous together.

Your baby reaching for you.

Those are the things you're going to care about years from now.

The outfits are just there to complement the story.
