What Should My Baby Wear for Their Cake Smash Photos?

Your baby's first birthday is coming up, you've picked the cake smash theme, and now you're wondering…
“What should my baby wear?”
Don't worry—you don't need to find the perfect Pinterest-worthy outfit. I want your baby's clothing to complement their theme while still letting their personality be the star of the show.
Start With Your Cake Smash Theme
The first thing to consider is your cake smash theme and backdrop.
Your baby's outfit doesn't have to match every color in the setup. Sometimes a simple outfit that coordinates with the theme photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your little one.
Think complementary colors, simple details, and something that allows your baby's personality to shine.
TAQ Photography Has a Wardrobe You Can Use
Don't have an outfit that works with your theme?
I've got you!
TAQ Photography has a selection of wardrobe pieces available for you to use during your session. So if you're stuck on what to wear or simply don't want to purchase another outfit your baby will wear for approximately 14 minutes, check out my available wardrobe options!
While I do have wardrobe pieces available to use, the cake smash outfit itself is not provided as part of your session.
If you have something special in mind for your baby's birthday, you're welcome to bring your own outfit.
Keep It Comfortable
This is HUGE.
Your baby doesn't care how adorable the outfit looks if they're uncomfortable wearing it. 😂
Choose something that allows your baby to sit, crawl, wiggle, explore, and eventually attack a cake.
Avoid anything too tight, itchy, stiff, or difficult to move around in.
Comfortable baby = happier baby = better photographs.
Simple Can Be Better
You don't need an outfit covered in bows, buttons, patterns, and accessories.
Sometimes the simplest outfits create the sweetest photographs.
A neutral romper, classic dress, overalls, suspenders, or a simple birthday outfit can look amazing against a themed backdrop.
And once the cake comes out?
Well…
Nobody is going to be looking at the outfit anymore. 😂
Bring a Backup!
Cake smash sessions can get messy quickly, and frosting has a special talent for finding absolutely everything.
I recommend bringing a backup outfit for afterward, especially if you don't want your little one riding home covered in birthday cake.
We'll save the really messy part for the end!
What About the Cake Smash Outfit?
Your baby can wear whatever outfit you choose for the cake portion of the session, as long as they're comfortable and able to move freely.
Some parents choose a special birthday outfit.
Others prefer something simple that they don't mind getting covered in frosting.
There is no wrong choice.
And remember, I don't provide the cake smash outfit—but my wardrobe is available if you'd like to choose something from what I have on hand.
Don't Forget the Little Details
Accessories can add a fun touch to your baby's birthday portraits.
You might consider:
A birthday hat
A simple headband or bow
Suspenders
A birthday crown
Little shoes or bare feet
A ONE accessory
A special item from their first year
Just remember: accessories are optional.
If your baby hates hats, we're not putting a hat on them just because it looked adorable on Pinterest. 😉
Happy baby > perfect outfit.
What About Parents?
If you've added parent photos to your cake smash session, don't forget to coordinate your own outfits with the theme!
You don't have to dress exactly like your baby. Instead, choose colors that complement the backdrop and your baby's outfit.
And here's your reminder from one mom to another:
Get in the picture.
Your baby won't care if you didn't feel perfectly camera-ready that day. Years from now, those photographs of you together will mean so much more than whether your hair was perfect.
And Then Comes the Cake…
Once we've finished your baby's clean portraits—and any parent photos you've added—it's time for the fun part.
Cake time! 🎂
Your baby's outfit may survive.
It may not.
Either way, we're going to capture the frosting-covered smiles, tiny fingers, messy cheeks, and all the personality that comes out when your baby realizes they're actually allowed to play with their food.
And when we're finished?
It's bathtub splash time! 🛁
The bathtub gives us one last chance to capture those adorable post-cake smiles and splashes while getting your little one cleaned up.
The Most Important Thing to Remember
Don't stress about finding the “perfect” outfit.
Your baby is the most important part of the photographs—not the clothes.
Choose something that fits comfortably, works with your theme, and makes you smile when you see your little one wearing it.
And if you need a little help choosing, take a look at my available wardrobe options.
Because someday, you'll look back at these photographs and remember how tiny they were, how much personality they had, and just how quickly that first year disappeared.
The cake will be gone.
The outfit will be packed away.
But those photographs will still be there.
And that's the part that matters. 🤍
