What Parents Should Expect at Their Newborn Photography Session
Updated: Jul 30
Truth is we never know what to expect š
So you've booked your newborn photography session. ā¤ļø
Now what?
If you're a first-time parent, you may be wondering what you're actually supposed to do when you arrive. What should you bring? What if your baby cries? What if they don't sleep? What are YOU supposed to do?
Take a deep breath.
You don't have to know what you're doing.
That's my job.
Your newborn photography session should feel less like an appointment you have to āperformā for and more like a relaxed experience where we take our time, follow your baby's lead, and capture all those tiny details you're going to miss way too quickly.
First Things First: Your Baby Is in Charge
I can have an entire setup planned out in my head, and your baby can walkāor, technically, be carriedāright in and immediately cancel my plans. š
That's newborn photography.
Your baby may be sleepy when you arrive.
They may be hungry.
They may need a diaper change.
They may want to be held.
They may decide that sleeping is absolutely not happening today.
It's all completely normal.
We don't rush your baby just because we have a schedule.
If your baby needs something, we stop and take care of it.
Expect to Take Your Time
A newborn session isn't something I want you to feel rushed through.
There will be time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, cuddling, and settling your baby.
Sometimes we move quickly because your little one is perfectly sleepy and happy.
Other times, your baby needs a little more time.
That's okay.
Patience is part of the TAQ newborn experience.
My goal is to create beautiful images while keeping your baby comfortable and your experience relaxed.
You Don't Need to Bring Everything You Own
One of the best parts of your TAQ newborn experience is that you don't have to arrive with a car packed to the ceiling.
I have a collection of newborn clothing, wraps, bonnets, accessories, and propsĀ available for your baby's session.
We'll choose pieces that fit your baby's size and create the look you want for your gallery.
What about Mom, Dad, and siblings?
While I don't provide clothing for parents or older children, I absolutely help you coordinate everyone's outfits before your session.
If you're unsure what to wear, send me screenshots, pictures, links, or outfit ideas.
We'll look at colors, patterns, textures, and styles together so everyone's clothing works beautifully with your newborn's wardrobe and the overall feel of the session.
So please don't stress about finding the āperfectā outfit.
We'll figure it out together.
Expect Some Baby Breaks
If your baby needs to eat, we stop.
If your baby needs to be changed, we stop.
If your baby needs Mom or Dad, we stop.
There is no prize for getting through a newborn session without a feeding break. š
And please don't apologize when your baby needs something.
You're taking care of your baby. That's exactly what you're supposed to do.
What If Your Baby Cries?
Your baby cries.
That's what babies do.
And no, you haven't ruined the session.
We soothe them, feed them, cuddle them, change them, and try again when they're ready.
Sometimes those unplanned moments become some of the most meaningful photographs of the entire gallery.
A newborn session doesn't have to be perfectly quiet and sleepy from beginning to end.
Real life is welcome here.
Expect to Be in the Photos
Mom and Dad, this isn't just a photo session for your baby.
You are part of this story.
I know you may not feel camera-ready. Especially Mom.
You just had a baby, and you may be exhausted, emotional, and wondering when you last had a full night's sleep.
You don't need to feel like a model.
I'll guide you through your poses and show you how to hold and interact with your baby so the photographs feel natural and beautiful.
And someday, your child will look back at those photographs and be so glad they have pictures of you together.
Siblings Are Welcome
If your newborn has older brothers or sisters, they are part of this new chapter, too.
We'll capture photographs of them with their new baby, along with individual images and family photographs when appropriate.
And remember, toddlers don't always follow directions.
Shocking, I know. š
That's why I don't expect them to sit perfectly still and smile on command.
We'll work with their personalities and let them be themselves.
Expect a Little Bit of Chaos
There may be crying.
There may be feeding.
There may be a rogue diaper situation.
There may be a toddler who has suddenly decided they no longer want anything to do with pictures.
There may even be a moment when we all look at each other and think:
āWell...that didn't go according to plan.āĀ š
And then we keep going.
That's part of what makes newborn photography different from other sessions.
We're working with tiny humans who haven't read the schedule.
Expect Me to Pay Attention to the Tiny Details
While we're photographing your baby, I'm looking for all those little things you'll want to remember.
The tiny toes.
The curled fingers.
The sleepy lips.
The eyelashes.
The baby rolls.
The little stretch.
The way your baby's hand wraps around yours.
And the way you look at your baby.
Because your baby won't stay this tiny.
These details are fleeting.
And that's exactly why they're worth photographing.
Expect a Relaxed Experience
My goal is for you to leave your session thinking:
āThat was actually fun.ā
Not:
āI'm so glad that's over.ā
š
You don't need to know how to pose.
You don't need to know what to do with your hands.
You don't need to know how to calm your baby.
You don't need to know which outfit looks best.
You don't need to apologize when your baby cries.
You just need to show up and love your baby.
I'll help with the rest.
Most of All, Expect to Remember How It Felt
Years from now, you may not remember exactly what everyone wore.
You may not remember which pose was your favorite.
You probably won't remember how long your baby slept during the session.
But I hope when you look at your photographs, you remember the feeling.
How tiny they were.
How new everything felt.
How you couldn't stop staring at them.
How they fit perfectly in your arms.
How your family changed forever.
That's what I want your newborn photographs to give you.
Not just a picture of what your baby looked likeābut a reminder of how it felt to love them when they were this small.
