What If My Kids Won’t Cooperate During Family Photos?

Let's talk about the thing every parent thinks before a family photo session:

“What if my kids completely lose their minds?”

Maybe your toddler is going through the “NO” phase.

Maybe your five-year-old suddenly refuses to smile.

Maybe your kids are fighting in the backseat before you even arrive.

Or maybe you have one child who thinks sitting still for more than 3.7 seconds is a personal attack.

I've got you.

As a family photographer in Buckeye, Arizona, I can promise you one thing:

Your kids do NOT have to behave perfectly for your family photos.

Actually, I don't really expect them to.

Your Kids Aren't Supposed to Sit Still the Entire Time

Family photos aren't school pictures.

I'm not going to put everyone in a straight line, tell your kids to smile, and expect them to stare at my camera for an hour.

That's not how I photograph families.

Instead, I want to capture interaction.

I want to see your kids laugh.

I want to see siblings being goofy.

I want to see them running toward you.

I want to photograph the way your toddler grabs your hand.

I want the cuddles, the giggles, the snuggles, and yes—even some of the chaos.

Because that's what your family actually looks like.

And those are the moments you're going to remember.

What If Your Toddler Says "NO" to Everything?

First of all…

Welcome to toddlerhood. 😂

If your toddler decides they don't want to participate, we're not going to force it.

I'll give them some space.

We'll change things up.

We'll play.

We'll move around.

We'll let them explore.

Sometimes the fastest way to get a child comfortable in front of the camera is to stop asking them to perform for it.

And sometimes the child who refused to smile for the first 15 minutes ends up being the one who gives us the biggest grin later.

Kids are unpredictable.

That's okay.

What If Your Child Is Shy?

Some kids walk into a session ready to become the next supermodel.

Other kids would prefer to hide behind Mom's leg and never make eye contact with the strange lady holding a camera.

Both are completely normal.

I don't believe in forcing kids to warm up on my timeline.

We'll let them take their time.

I'll interact with them.

I'll give them opportunities to participate without putting them on the spot.

And eventually, they usually start forgetting that I'm even taking pictures.

That's when the magic happens.

What If Your Kids Are Fighting?

Yep.

It happens.

Sibling arguments are not a sign that your family session is going badly.

They're kids.

They fight.

They laugh.

They annoy each other.

Then five minutes later they're laying on top of each other laughing like nothing happened.

That's childhood.

We aren't trying to manufacture a perfect version of your family.

We're documenting the real one.

And sometimes the moments right after the chaos are the best photographs.

Please Don't Spend the Whole Session Saying "SMILE!"

I know.

It's tempting.

You see your kid making a weird face and immediately say:

“SMILE!”

Then they give you the most painfully fake smile known to humanity. 😂

Instead, let me work with them.

I'll use movement, games, prompts, jokes, and interaction to get genuine expressions.

Sometimes I'll ask them to run.

Sometimes we'll play.

Sometimes I'll have them whisper something ridiculous into Mom's ear.

Sometimes I'll ask siblings to hug—and then immediately regret giving them that much power. 😂

The goal is to get your kids doing something, not simply telling them to smile.

What Can You Do Before Your Session?

There are a few things you can do to make your family photography session easier.

Don't Make It a Huge Deal

Try not to spend the entire week telling your kids:

“You HAVE to behave for pictures.”

That can actually create more pressure.

Instead, tell them we're going somewhere fun to play and take some pictures.

Make Sure They're Fed

Hungry kids are rarely interested in cooperating.

Bring snacks if necessary.

Just maybe avoid anything that can stain clothing five minutes before your session. 😉

Bring a Favorite Comfort Item

If your child has a favorite little stuffed animal or blanket, bring it.

We may not use it in every photograph, but having something familiar can help them feel comfortable.

Don't Threaten Them With Consequences

This one is for Mom and Dad.

I promise you:

“If you don't smile for the photographer, you're grounded!”

is probably not going to produce the relaxed, natural family photos we're looking for.

😂

Let me handle the photography.

You handle being Mom and Dad.

And Whatever You Do—Don't Apologize

This is a big one.

If your child is having a rough moment, please don't stand there apologizing to me.

You don't have to.

I've been around kids.

I've seen meltdowns.

I've seen tantrums.

I've seen kids refuse to get out of the car.

I've seen kids decide they absolutely, positively will NOT take one more picture.

And guess what?

We survive. 😂

Your child's behavior isn't ruining your session.

We simply adjust.

Sometimes the "Bad" Moments Are the Best Ones

Here's something I want every parent to remember:

Your family photos don't have to show everyone smiling directly at the camera.

Some of my favorite images are the ones where nobody is looking at me.

Maybe your daughter is laughing at Dad.

Maybe your son is hugging Mom.

Maybe your kids are running through the grass.

Maybe you're holding your baby and looking down at them.

Maybe everyone is piled together in a giant family hug.

Those photographs tell a story.

And someday, those little moments may mean even more to you than the perfectly posed photograph.

Your Kids Don't Have to Be Perfect for TAQ Photography

If your biggest fear about booking family photos is:

“My kids won't cooperate.”

I want you to know something.

That's okay.

Bring me the wild kid.

Bring me the shy kid.

Bring me the silly kid.

Bring me the toddler who woke up and chose violence.

Bring me the siblings who were fighting five minutes ago.

Bring me all of it.

I'll work with what your family gives me that day.

Because I'm not trying to photograph some imaginary perfect family.

I'm photographing yours.

And honestly?

I wouldn't want it any other way.
