The Best Time of Day for a Cake Smash Photography Session

When should you schedule your baby's cake smash?

Morning?

Afternoon?

Right after a nap?

Right before lunch?

If you're hoping there's one magical time of day when every baby is guaranteed to be happy and cooperative, I have some bad news…

Babies did not get the memo. 😂

The best time for a cake smash session isn't necessarily the same time for every baby. Instead, I recommend choosing a time that works well with your baby's normal routine.

Your Baby's Schedule Comes First

At around one year old, your baby may have a pretty predictable routine.

They might be happiest first thing in the morning.

Maybe they're their happiest self after their afternoon nap.

Or perhaps they don't hit their stride until later in the day.

That's what we want to work with.

A well-rested baby is generally going to have a much easier time enjoying their cake smash than an exhausted baby who has decided the entire world is against them.

And honestly?

I can't blame them. 😂

Morning Cake Smash Sessions

For babies who are early risers, morning can be an excellent time for a cake smash.

If your baby wakes up happy and ready to take on the day, scheduling your session earlier can mean we're catching them when they're naturally at their best.

Morning sessions can also work especially well if your baby normally naps in the afternoon.

After-Nap Sessions

If your baby is happiest after a good nap, schedule around that!

A rested baby is usually more interested in what's happening around them, which can make it easier for them to explore the backdrop, interact with you, and eventually discover that there's a cake sitting in front of them.

Just give yourself enough time after waking up to get everyone dressed and out the door without feeling rushed.

What About Feeding?

You don't want your baby arriving absolutely starving.

But you also don't necessarily want to give them a huge meal right before putting a giant cake in front of them.

Try to keep their normal feeding routine as much as possible.

A comfortable, satisfied baby is the goal.

And if your baby needs a bottle or snack during the session?

We'll take a break.

There is no prize for finishing a cake smash session without stopping for a snack. 😉

Avoid the “I'm Exhausted” Zone

This might be the most important thing to consider.

If your baby normally gets cranky, tired, or fussy at a certain time of day, that's probably not the time I'd choose for their cake smash.

Your baby's first birthday photos are much more important than squeezing them into a time slot that technically works on the calendar.

Let's choose a time when your little one has the best chance of being comfortable and happy.

What If My Baby Doesn't Cooperate?

First of all…

Welcome to parenting. 😂

Your baby may have slept perfectly, eaten perfectly, and arrived at the studio in the world's best mood.

And then suddenly…

Nope.

That's okay!

Your baby doesn't have to smile the entire time.

They don't have to immediately love the cake.

They don't have to sit perfectly still.

We can take breaks, give them time to warm up, and follow their lead.

Sometimes the most adorable photographs come from the moments you weren't expecting.

Don't Forget the Whole Session Flow

Your cake smash isn't just the cake portion.

At TAQ Photography, we start with your baby's clean portraits with their themed backdrop.

If you've chosen to add parent photos, we'll capture those before things get messy.

Then comes the cake smash!

And finally, we finish with a bathtub splash to capture those adorable post-cake smiles, giggles, and messy little toes. 🛁

That's why I want your baby to have enough energy to enjoy the entire experience—not just the first ten minutes.

So, What's the Best Time?

Here's the simple answer:

The best time for your baby's cake smash is when your baby is typically rested, fed, and happiest.

That might be morning.

It might be after a nap.

It might be completely different from another baby's schedule.

Your baby doesn't need to fit into someone else's routine.

We'll work with yours.

One More Thing…

Don't stress if the day doesn't go exactly according to plan.

Your baby might skip their nap.

They might decide breakfast wasn't enough.

They might arrive shy.

They might be wildly excited.

They might completely ignore the cake.

All of that is okay.

My job isn't to make your baby perform.

My job is to capture your baby being your baby.

So choose a time that gives your little one the best chance of being rested and comfortable, bring the cake, and let the rest unfold.

Because whether your baby smashes the cake in five minutes or spends ten minutes staring at it suspiciously…

we're going to capture the memories. 🤍
