Should You Feed Your Kids Before Family Photos?

YES.
Okay, glad we cleared that up. đ
But seriouslyâif you're getting ready for family photos and wondering whether your kids should eat beforehand, my answer is almost always:
Please feed your children.
Hungry kids + family photos = a combination I don't recommend.
And if you've ever witnessed a toddler who has crossed the line from âI'm a little hungryâ to âI have not eaten in 47 seconds and the world is ending,â you already know what I'm talking about.
Don't Let Your Child Arrive Hangry
Family photos are exciting, but they're also a change from your normal routine.
You're getting everyone dressed.
You're loading up the car.
You're making sure nobody forgot their shoes.
You're probably yelling, âWhere are your pants?!â at least once.
The last thing we need is a hungry child arriving at the session ready to declare war on everyone.
A well-fed kid is generally a much happier kid.
And happy kids are a whole lot easier to photograph.
But Don't Feed Them a Giant Meal Five Minutes Before
There's a little bit of balance here.
I don't recommend giving your child a huge meal immediately before your session and then expecting them to run around, play, and smile.
Especially if we're doing an outdoor session in Arizona.
Instead, aim for a normal meal or snack at a comfortable time before we meet.
You know your child better than anyone.
If they normally eat dinner at 5:00 and our session is at 5:30, don't suddenly change their entire routine because we're taking pictures.
Keep things as normal as possible.
Bring Snacks With You
Always. Bring. Snacks.
I will never judge you for showing up with a bag full of snacks.
In fact, I encourage it.
Just be strategic about what you bring.
Great options:
Crackers
Pretzels
Fruit snacks
Granola bars
Applesauce pouches
Cheese sticks
Small pieces of fruit
Favorite familiar snacks
Maybe Leave These at Home:
Anything super messy.
Anything covered in chocolate.
Anything bright red.
Anything that can somehow get into your child's hair, eyebrows, clothes, and ears simultaneously.
Because somehow kids are professionals at that. đ
What If Your Child Says They're Not Hungry?
You know your kid.
If they genuinely don't want to eat, don't force a meal just because we're taking pictures.
But I'd still bring something along.
Because there's a very real possibility that the second we start photographing, your child will suddenly discover that they are the hungriest human being who has ever lived.
And that's okay.
We'll take a snack break.
What If We Need to Stop During the Session?
We stop.
That's it.
Your child needs a snack?
Let's take a break.
Your baby needs to eat?
Take care of the baby.
Someone needs a drink?
Grab a drink.
Someone needs a bathroom break?
Go.
Your family session isn't a race.
I'd rather take five minutes to reset than spend 20 minutes trying to convince a hungry, exhausted child to smile.
And Please Don't Apologize
If your child needs a snack during your family photography session, you don't need to look at me like you've somehow failed photography class.
đ
You haven't.
Kids have needs.
We're going to take care of them.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your photographs is stop trying to get the photograph for a minute.
Feed your kid.
Give them a drink.
Let them breathe.
Then we'll get back to it.
Sometimes Snacks Can Actually Help Me Get the Picture
Let's be honest.
I'm not above using a little snack bribery when appropriate. đ
If your child needs a little motivation, that's okay.
Sometimes a tiny snack between photographs can help us get through a tricky moment.
And sometimes I'll turn it into part of the experience.
Because I'm not interested in making your child sit perfectly still and perform for my camera.
I want them comfortable enough to be themselves.
Don't Forget WaterâEspecially in Arizona
This is particularly important for family sessions here in Buckeye.
Arizona heat is no joke.
If we're outside, bring water for everyone.
Kids can get hot and tired much faster than adults, and nobody wants a dehydrated, miserable toddler halfway through family pictures.
Depending on the time of year and location, we may also build in little breaks so everyone can cool down.
Your family's comfort comes first.
Always.
What About Babies?
Babies are a completely different story.
Feed your baby when your baby needs to eat.
Don't try to make a newborn or infant wait until after the session because you're worried about "wasting time."
We can stop.
You can feed them.
You can burp them.
You can change them.
You can cuddle them.
And then, when they're ready, we keep going.
Sometimes those quiet feeding and cuddling moments end up being some of the sweetest photographs from the entire session.
The Real Goal Isn't a Perfectly Behaved Child
This is something I want parents to remember before they arrive:
Your kids don't have to be perfect.
They don't have to sit still.
They don't have to smile every second.
They don't have to follow every direction.
They just need to show up.
I'll work with their personalities.
We'll play.
We'll move.
We'll take breaks.
We'll laugh.
We'll adjust when we need to.
And yesâŚ
we'll feed them. đ
Because your family photos should be funânot an hour-long battle between you and a hungry toddler.
So, Should You Feed Your Kids Before Family Photos?
Absolutely.
Give them a normal meal or snack before your session.
Bring extra snacks.
Bring water.
And if someone gets hungry during the session?
We'll take a break.
No stress.
No apologies.
No frantic attempt to make a hungry kid smile.
Because when you book a family session with TAQ Photography in Buckeye, Arizona, your family's needs come first.
The goal isn't to create a picture-perfect version of your family.
It's to capture your family exactly as they are right now.
The giggles.
The cuddles.
The crazy kids.
The snacks.
The chaos.
All of it.
And someday, you're going to look back at these photographs and be so glad you captured this exact season of life.
Now go feed that kid. đâ¤ď¸
Then let's take some pictures.
