Newborn Photography Isn't Just About the Baby: Including Parents & Siblings

Someone's getting jealous...
When you think about newborn photography, you probably picture the baby.
Those tiny toes.
The little fingers.
The sleepy cheeks.
The sweet little lips.
And yes...we're absolutely going to capture all of that. ❤️
But here's something I want every new parent to know:
Your newborn session isn't just about your baby.
It's about your family becoming something new.
It's about Mom.
It's about Dad.
It's about the big brother or sister who suddenly has a brand-new baby taking up a whole lot of everyone's attention.
And those photographs are just as important.
Mom, You Need to Be in the Pictures
I already know what some of you are thinking.
“Anne, I just had a baby. I am NOT getting in front of a camera.”
I hear you.
You're tired.
Your body has just done something incredible.
You're probably wearing approximately 47 different emotions at the same time.
And you may not feel anything like the woman you were before pregnancy.
But please hear me:
Your baby doesn't care what you looked like.
One day, your child is going to look at these photographs and see their mom holding them when they were tiny.
They're going to see your hands.
Your smile.
The way you looked at them.
They're going to see how completely loved they were.
And I promise you, those things are going to matter so much more than whether you thought you looked perfect that day.
Dad, You're Not Getting Out of It Either. 😂
Sorry, Dad.
You're in the pictures, too.
And someday, you're going to be incredibly grateful that you are.
There is something so special about photographing a new dad holding his baby for the first time.
Those tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
The way you instinctively support that little head.
The look on your face when you're staring down at your new baby.
Those aren't just photographs of Dad.
They're photographs of the beginning of Dad.
And I'll guide you through everything.
You don't need to know how to pose.
You don't need to know where to put your hands.
You don't need to practice your smile in the mirror beforehand.
Just love your baby.
I've got the rest.
Your Baby's First Family Portrait
There is something incredibly powerful about that first photograph of your entire family together.
Mom.
Dad.
Baby.
Maybe siblings.
Everyone together.
It's the first visual record of this new version of your family.
And I want it to feel natural.
Not stiff.
Not forced.
Not like everyone was told to stand in exactly the same position and smile at the camera.
I'll give you direction and prompts so you know what to do, but I'll also look for the moments that happen naturally.
Because sometimes the best image isn't the one where everyone is looking directly at me.
Sometimes it's Mom looking down at the baby.
Dad looking at Mom.
A sibling leaning in.
A little hand touching the baby's head.
Those are the moments that tell the story.
And Then There's the Big Brother or Sister...
This is where things can get REALLY interesting. 😂
A new baby can be a huge change for an older sibling.
They might be thrilled.
They might be curious.
They might be completely uninterested.
They might want to hold the baby for approximately 4.2 seconds before announcing they're done.
Or they might suddenly need Mom's attention the exact second we need one more photograph.
All normal.
I don't expect little ones to behave like tiny professional models.
They're kids.
And that's exactly what I want to photograph.
Let Them Be Themselves
If your toddler wants to giggle, let's capture it.
If they want to cuddle Mom, let's capture it.
If they want to give their new sibling a kiss, beautiful.
If they're having a moment and need a break?
That's okay, too.
I don't want to force a child into a photograph just because we think we need one particular shot.
Instead, we'll work with their personality and find opportunities to capture genuine connection.
Sometimes the photographs we didn't plan are the ones you end up loving the most.
Sibling Photos Don't Have to Be Perfect
Let's be honest.
Getting a toddler and a newborn to cooperate at the same time can feel a little like trying to coordinate a meeting between two CEOs who have completely different schedules.
One needs a snack.
One needs a diaper.
One wants to run.
One wants to sleep.
😂
That's why patience matters.
We take our time.
We try different things.
We let your older child take breaks.
And we never need to force a moment.
What Should Siblings Wear?
Don't stress over this one, either.
I don't provide clothing for older children, but I do help you coordinate their outfits with the newborn's wardrobe and the overall style of your session.
Send me screenshots.
Send me links.
Send me pictures of things you already have.
We'll look at colors, textures, patterns, and styles together.
And your newborn?
I've got them covered with newborn clothing, wraps, bonnets, accessories, and props.
The goal isn't for everyone to look identical.
The goal is for everyone to look like they belong together.
The Photographs You'll Appreciate Later
Right now, you're probably focused on your baby.
Understandably.
But think about your family five, ten, or twenty years from now.
Your baby isn't going to be tiny forever.
Your toddler won't always have those chubby cheeks.
Your teenager won't always be the little kid who couldn't wait to meet their new sibling.
And you won't always remember exactly how it felt to hold your newborn for the first time.
Photographs help you remember.
That's why I want to capture your family together.
Not just the baby.
Because Your Baby Will Want These Pictures Someday
Maybe not today.
Let's be honest—today they're mostly concerned with eating and sleeping. 😂
But someday?
They're going to want to see what you looked like when they were born.
They're going to want to see Dad holding them.
They're going to want to see their siblings when they were little.
They're going to want to see the family they were born into.
And those photographs become part of their story, too.
You Don't Have to Know What to Do
This is probably the biggest thing I want parents to know.
You don't have to know how to pose.
You don't have to know how to hold your baby for photographs.
Your children don't have to sit perfectly still.
You don't have to smile at the camera every second.
I'll guide you.
I'll give you direction when you need it.
I'll give your children prompts and opportunities to interact naturally.
And I'll watch for those little moments that happen in between.
Your job is simply to love your family.
My job is to preserve it.
The Whole Family Belongs in the Story
Your newborn is the reason we're getting together.
But the photographs we're creating are about so much more than one tiny person.
They're about the people who were waiting for them.
The mother who carried them.
The father who couldn't wait to meet them.
The sibling who is learning what it means to be a big brother or sister.
The family that suddenly looks a little different than it did a few months ago.
That's what makes newborn photography so meaningful.
We're not just photographing a baby.
We're photographing the beginning of a new chapter.
And someday, you'll look back at these photographs and realize just how quickly that chapter flew by.
Let's capture your whole story.
If you're expecting a baby in Buckeye or the West Valley, I'd love to help you create a newborn photography experience that includes the people who make your family yours.
TAQ Photography — because your baby deserves beautiful photographs, but your family deserves to be in them, too. ❤️
