How to Prepare for Your Baby’s Cake Smash Session

Your baby's cake smash session is coming up!

You've chosen your theme, you've got the cake plans in motion, and now you're wondering…

“What am I actually supposed to do to get my baby ready?”

The good news?

Not much.

You don't need to rehearse the cake smash, practice smiling, or teach your baby how to pose.

They're one. They have enough going on. 😂

My goal at TAQ Photography is to make your cake smash session fun and relaxed, so here are a few simple things you can do beforehand to help your little one have the best experience possible.

1. Choose Your Theme

First, decide what kind of look you'd like for your baby's cake smash.

And remember—you aren't limited to a specific list of themes.

The ideas you see on my website or social media are simply inspiration.

You can choose one of those ideas, change the colors, combine ideas, or come up with something completely different.

Think about your baby's personality, favorite things, colors you love, or something meaningful to your family.

Make it yours!

2. Plan Your Baby's Outfit

You'll want to decide what your baby will wear for their portraits and cake smash.

TAQ Photography does not provide the cake smash outfit, so you'll want to bring your own if you have something special in mind.

However, I do have a wardrobe available for you to use if you need some help finding the right look.

Choose something comfortable that coordinates with your theme and allows your baby to move freely.

And don't forget a backup outfit for afterward!

3. Don't Forget the Cake

This is a big one:

TAQ Photography does not provide the cake.

You'll need to arrange for your baby's cake and bring it with you to the session.

When choosing your cake, keep it soft and easy for little hands to explore. Buttercream frosting is a great option, and simple cakes can photograph beautifully.

Please Keep Food Allergies in Mind

Before choosing your baby's cake, consider any known food allergies, sensitivities, or dietary restrictions.

If you're ordering from a bakery, ask about ingredients and possible cross-contamination.

You know your baby best, so choose a cake that you're comfortable allowing them to eat and play with.

4. Don't Feed Them Right Before the Session

You don't want your baby arriving starving, but you also don't want them completely full right before we introduce a giant cake.

A normal feeding schedule is usually best.

The goal is a happy, comfortable baby who has enough energy to explore and play.

5. Let Your Baby Get a Good Nap

If your baby's schedule allows it, try to plan the session around their normal nap routine.

A well-rested baby is much more likely to be interested in what's happening around them.

But don't panic if the nap doesn't go perfectly.

Because, once again…

They're one. 😂

Sometimes babies have other plans.

6. Bring Their Comfort Items

If your baby has a favorite pacifier, blanket, lovey, or toy, bring it along.

You may not need it, but it's nice to have something familiar nearby if your little one needs a little reassurance.

And if your baby needs Mom or Dad?

That's okay, too.

7. Pack the Essentials

Here's your quick cake smash bag checklist:

• Cake 🎂

• Baby's outfit

• Backup outfit

• Diapers

• Wipes

• Bottles or snacks if needed

• Pacifier or comfort item

• Anything your baby normally needs

And maybe bring a plastic bag for those very likely-to-be-frosting-covered clothes.

8. Don't Practice Smashing the Cake

Seriously.

You don't need to give your baby a practice cake at home.

Some babies immediately know what to do.

Others aren't sure what that strange object is.

Some babies love cake.

Some babies hate cake.

Some babies only want the frosting.

And some babies look at the whole thing and think we're all completely ridiculous.

Every reaction is okay.

I'll follow your baby's lead and capture their genuine personality.

9. Prepare for a Little Mess

This is a cake smash.

It's supposed to get messy!

Frosting may end up on your baby's hands, face, hair, clothes, and pretty much anywhere else it can possibly go.

That's why we save the cake for later in the session.

And once we've finished with the cake?

It's bathtub splash time! 🛁

Your little one gets to splash, play, and get cleaned up while we capture even more adorable photographs.

10. If You've Added Parent Photos, Get Ready to Get in the Picture!

If you've chosen to add parent photos to your cake smash session, plan your outfit ahead of time.

Coordinate with your baby's theme without feeling like you need to match perfectly.

And please don't talk yourself out of being photographed because you don't feel “ready.”

Your baby deserves photographs with you, too.

Years from now, they aren't going to notice whether your hair was perfect.

They're going to see Mom and Dad loving on them at ONE.

That's worth being in the picture for.

11. Most Importantly… Don't Stress!

This might be the most important preparation tip of all.

Don't put pressure on your baby to perform.

Your little one doesn't have to smile on command.

They don't have to smash the cake.

They don't have to sit perfectly still.

They don't even have to love the cake!

We'll give them time to warm up, take breaks when needed, and follow their lead.

The unexpected moments are often some of the best photographs.

Your Only Job Is to Enjoy It

Your baby has spent an entire year growing, changing, learning, and becoming their own little person.

Now it's time to celebrate.

I'll take care of guiding the session and capturing the moments.

You just bring your baby, their cake, and a willingness to let things get a little messy.

Because before you know it, that tiny baby sitting in front of the cake will be a toddler running through your house.
