How to Choose the Perfect Cake for Your Baby’s Cake Smash

The cake is ordered, the theme is picked, and your baby's first birthday cake smash is officially on the calendar.

Now comes the big question:

What kind of cake should you get? 🎂

Don't worry—you don't need to be a professional baker or spend a fortune creating a Pinterest-worthy masterpiece.

The perfect cake smash cake is one that looks great with your theme, is easy for your baby to dig into, and—most importantly—is safe and enjoyable for your little one.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your baby's cake smash cake.

Keep the Cake Small

Your baby doesn't need a giant birthday cake.

In fact, a smaller cake is often perfect for a cake smash session.

A cake around 6 inches is typically plenty for your little one to explore, grab, squish, and taste.

Remember, we're photographing the experience—not feeding an entire birthday party!

A smaller cake also gives your baby plenty of room to interact with it without being completely overwhelmed by a giant mountain of frosting.

Choose a Cake That's Easy to Smash

This might sound obvious, but not all cakes are created equal when it comes to smashing.

You want a cake that's soft and easy for little hands to dig into.

A soft vanilla or chocolate cake with a generous layer of frosting works beautifully.

Avoid cakes that are extremely dense, hard, or covered in decorations that could make them difficult for your baby to explore.

The goal is for those tiny hands to be able to easily squish right into it.

Buttercream Is Your Friend

When it comes to frosting, buttercream is a great choice.

It's soft, easy to smash, and makes those adorable messy photographs we all love.

Whipped frosting can also work well.

Just remember that your baby may be eating some of the cake, so choose ingredients you feel comfortable giving your child.

Be Careful With Hard Decorations

This is an important one.

Skip cake decorations that could pose a choking hazard, such as:

  • Hard candies

  • Small decorative pieces

  • Hard sprinkles

  • Large pieces of fondant

  • Wooden or plastic decorations that aren't meant to be eaten

If you're adding a cake topper, make sure it's removed before your baby starts digging in.

When in doubt, keep it simple.

A beautiful cake doesn't need a bunch of hard decorations to photograph well.

Match Your Cake to Your Theme

This is where you can have fun!

Your cake doesn't have to perfectly match your backdrop, but coordinating the colors can really pull everything together.

If your theme includes soft neutrals, consider a simple white or neutral cake.

For a colorful birthday theme, you might choose frosting colors that complement the backdrop.

And if you have a specific theme—animals, flowers, trucks, princesses, or something completely unique to your baby—your cake can be another little detail that brings the whole setup together.

Simple Cakes Photograph Beautifully

Don't feel like your cake needs to look like it belongs on a television baking competition.

Sometimes the simplest cakes photograph the best.

A beautifully frosted cake with a few coordinating details can keep the focus where it belongs:

Your baby.

After all, we're not really photographing the cake.

We're photographing the moment your baby discovers that apparently Mom and Dad have decided playing with food is acceptable today. 😂

Consider Your Baby's Favorite Flavors

If your baby has already started eating solid foods, think about flavors and ingredients they enjoy.

A simple vanilla cake is always a popular choice, but you can choose whatever flavor you feel is appropriate for your baby.

Just remember that your baby's first birthday isn't the best time to introduce a bunch of completely new ingredients.

If your baby has known food allergies or sensitivities, be sure to take those into consideration when ordering the cake.

When it comes to ingredients, you know your baby best.

Think About the Mess

This is a cake smash.

It's supposed to get messy!

Frosting will probably end up on your baby's hands, face, hair, clothes, and possibly places you didn't know frosting could reach. 😂

That's why we save the cake smash portion until after the clean portraits and any parent photos you've added.

And then, when the cake has officially been destroyed…

We move on to the bathtub splash! 🛁

It's the perfect messy finale.

Don't Forget to Ask Your Baker About Ingredients

If you're ordering from a local bakery, let them know the cake is specifically for a baby's cake smash.

They can help you choose an appropriate cake and frosting and answer questions about ingredients.

If you're making the cake yourself, keep the same things in mind: soft cake, easy-to-smash frosting, baby-friendly ingredients, and no hard decorations.

You Don't Need a Perfect Cake

Here's the biggest thing I want you to remember:

Your baby doesn't care what the cake looks like.

They aren't going to critique the frosting technique.

They're not going to notice if the colors aren't exactly the shade you envisioned.

They certainly aren't going to complain if the cake isn't Instagram-perfect.

They may lick it.

They may smash it.

They may stare at it.

They may eat the frosting and completely ignore the cake.

And they may decide the whole thing is highly suspicious.

Whatever happens, we'll photograph it.

Because the best cake smash photographs aren't about a perfect cake.

They're about your baby's genuine reactions, expressions, and personality.

The Cake Is Just the Beginning

At TAQ Photography, your cake smash session begins with adorable portraits of your baby with their themed backdrop.

If you've chosen to add parent photos, we'll capture those before things get messy.

Then it's time for the cake smash!

And once your little one has had enough frosting-covered fun, we'll finish with a bathtub splash to capture those final smiles, giggles, and splashes.

Your baby's first birthday only happens once.

The cake will eventually be eaten.

The decorations will come down.

But those photographs will let you remember exactly how your little one celebrated turning ONE.

So choose a cake your baby can smash, bring the personality, and let the mess happen.

I've got the camera ready. 🤍
